Tawa Qassimiya is a traditional Saudi Arabian sweet made from wheat flour, milk powder, sugar, yeast, and baking powder. It is a type of pancake that is cooked in oil until golden brown. Tawa Qassimiya is typically served warm with honey or syrup.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup white flour
  • 1 tbsp milk powder
  • 1 tbsp white sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ½ cup water

Instructions:

  1. Combine whole wheat flour, white flour, milk powder, sugar, salt, yeast, and baking powder in a large bowl.
  2. Add oil and water, mix until the dough is smooth.
  3. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 40 minutes, doubling in size.
  4. Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface to ⅛ inch thickness.
  5. Cut into 1-inch circles using a circular cutter.
  6. Heat oil in a deep skillet, fry the tawa discs until golden brown.
  7. Serve warm with honey or syrup.

Notes:

  • Enhance flavor by adding 1 tsp vanilla, cinnamon, or saffron to the dough.
  • Use a deep skillet for frying to prevent sticking.
  • Constantly flip the tawa every 10-15 seconds while frying for perfectly round, hollow discs. This constant movement ensures a light and airy center, making your Tawa an absolute delight. Enjoy!

  • ½ cup white flour
  • 1 tbsp milk powder
  • 1 tbsp white sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ½ cup water

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, milk powder, sugar, salt, yeast, and baking powder.
  • Add the oil and water, and mix until the dough is smooth and well-combined.
  • Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place for 40 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  • After rising, roll out the dough on a floured surface to a thickness of ⅛ inch.
  • Using a circular cutter, cut the dough into small circles about 1 inch in diameter.
  • Heat the oil in a deep skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the tawa discs to the hot oil, and fry until golden brown.
  • Serve the tawa warm with honey or syrup.

Notes

Additional flavor can be added to the tawa by adding 1 teaspoon of vanilla, cinnamon, or saffron to the dough.
It is best to use a deep skillet for frying so that the tawa does not stick to the bottom.
Flipping them frequently, ideally every 10-15 seconds, is key to forming perfectly round, hollow discs. This constant movement prevents the dough from settling and creating a dense center.
